WELLSVILLE — Key plays at opportune times led the Wellsville High School softball team to a sweep of Baldwin Thursday in Wellsville.

The Eagles won 3-2 in eight innings and 8-3.

“Two really good wins for us,” Wellsville coach Chris Rose said. “We did the little things right. We got clutch hits.”

The opener was an intense game. Rose said it was a well-played game.

Moriah Kayhill hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to tie it. Wellsville threw out a runner at first base from right field to keep the game tied at 2-2 as Baldwin had the go-ahead run at third.

In the bottom of the eighth, Lauren McDaniels reached base and advanced to second in front of Ashley Sparks’ RBI triple to give Wellsville the victory.

The second game was back and forth early. Wellsville got the bats rolling in the fifth and sixth innings. The Eagles plated four in the fifth and two in the sixth.

McDaniel was 2-for-3. Justin Dougan and Raegan Beckley, the winning pitcher in the opener, had two RBIs each. Kaylynn Peacock was the winning pitcher in the nightcap.

Wellsville (6-0, 4-0) plays Tuesday at Anderson County.
