OU softball falls into KCAC tie

MCPHERSON — The Ottawa University softball team fell into a tie for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference lead after splitting Wednesday with McPherson in McPherson.

Ottawa won the opener 9-1 in six innings. The Lady Braves lost 7-6 in the nightcap.

Ottawa and Kansas Wesleyan are tied at the top of the KCAC with 11-3 marks, which is one game ahead of Bethany.

Ottawa scored five runs in the top of the sixth to run-rule McPherson in the opener. The Lady Braves scored two runs in the second and fifth innings.

Catherine Wallace had two home runs, including one in the sixth inning to power the big rally. She had four RBIs in the opener.

Elisa Valenzuela went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in first game.

Gabby Markham picked up her 11th victory of the season. She had eight strikeouts.

The nightcap saw McPherson lead 3-0 after the first inning. Ottawa tied it with three runs in the second inning.

Savannah Taylor hit a two-run home run to tie game.

McPherson scored twice in the bottom of the second inning, one in the third and fourth innings to forge a 7-3 lead.

The Lady Braves battled back. Ottawa scored three runs in the sixth inning to pull within a run.

Wallace drove home two in the rally and Taylor scored on a wild pitch.

Darin Lewis went 3-for-3. Valenzuela had two hits.

Molli Morgan pitched 2 1/3 innings in the loss.

Ottawa (21-16, 11-3) plays 1 p.m. today at Southwestern.
