Peoples wins ESU shot put

EMPORIA — Former Ottawa High School standout and current University of Missouri All-American Kearsten Peoples won the shot put Wednesday in the Emporia State University Mid-week Open.

Peoples threw the shot put 56 feet, 5 inches, which was a season-best mark. She has a career-best of 59-9.5, which also is a school record, at last summer’s U.S. Olympic Trials where she finished fourth.

The sophomore was fourth in the hammer throw (173-5) and discus (140-5) at the Emporia meet. Peoples has won three outdoor meet gold medals in the shot put and one in the discus during the 2013 outdoor season.

She finished ninth in the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in the shot put.

Peoples competes this weekend in the Drake Relays.
