OU softball receives national bid

GREAT BEND ­— The Ottawa University softball earned the conference’s second bid to the NAIA National Tournament because of its second place finish in the regular season.

The Lady Braves fell 2-1 to Tabor Friday in the conference tourney semifinals  in Great Bend and was eliminated. Top-seeded Kansas Wesleyan, which defeated Ottawa, 5-0, won the tourney title.

Ottawa (26-21) will find out where and when it plays today.

Ottawa played a defensive battle against No. 6 Tabor.

Ottawa scored its only run in the second inning. Tabor answered in the bottom of the frame to tie it.

Track

NORTH NEWTON — The Ottawa track teams earned 22 all-conference selections, three conference championships, two school records and qualified the men’s 400-meter relay team for the NAIA Track and Field National Championships in the KCAC meet this weekend in North Newton.

The men were sixth with 70 points and the women took fifth with 60 points.

Anthony Perry was a three-time all-KCAC performer. He won the long jump and finished third in the 100 and 200 races. He also ran a leg on the 400 relay team.

Jordan Calderwood won the women’s 1,500. The women’s 3,200 relay team of Jena Richardson, Ali Heilman, Calderwood and Janelle Bailey won the race and set a school record.

Chelsea Fullerton set a school record in the 10,000 race. Calderwood was three-time all-KCAC performer and Fullerton and Richardson were two-time all-KCAC performers.

Men

Long jump — 1, Perry, 22-1; 7, Riley, 20-6.

Triple jump — 2, Riley, 43-5.

High jump — 4, Brown, 6-0; 6, Washington, 5-8.

Pole vault — 7, Borger, 11-4.

Shot put — 6, Hooks, 43-9.

100 — 3, Perry, 10.81.

200 — 3, Perry, 22.27.

400 relay — OU, 41.83.

1,500 — 7, Mendez, 4:10.

5,000 — 5, Carlson, 15:59; 8, Mendez, 16:07.

110 hurdles — 3, Whitaker, 15.63.

400 hurdles — 7, Smoote, 1:00.

Women

400 — 8, Dains.

800 — 4, Richardson, 2:25.

1,500 — 1, Calderwood, 4:55.

5,000 — 4, Fullerton, 19:54; 5, Calderwood, 20:07.

10,000 — 2, Fullerton, 40:55.26 (school record).

400 hurdles — 5, Kessler, 1:09.

3,200 relay — 1, OU (Richardson, Heilman, Calderood, Bailey), 9:50.27 (school record).

Hammer throw — 8, Gaab, 98-6.

Javelin — 5, Ramsey, 104-2.
