DE SOTO — Ottawa High School senior Jonathan Kuczmarski won the Frontier League singles title Monday in De Soto.

He knocked off De Soto’s Luke Zoeller in the finals, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5.

“He showed great perseverance and determination in getting the win in the final,” Ottawa coach Eric Sparks said. “There were many momentum swings in the match and Jonathan fought hard and stayed focused.

“He had four or five match points in the second set that didn’t go his way, so I’m  very proud of the way he came back in the third set.

“Both players played a solid match and I believe have potential to do well at regionals and state. Jonathan is playing his best tennis all season, which is coming at a good time.”

Ottawa’s No. 1 doubles team of Vince Sylvester and Alex Reed finished third.

Sparks said the Ottawa duo played consistent and had another strong showing.

“I know they would have liked to play in the championship match, but third place is still really good considering the quality of doubles teams there,” Sparks said. “They are playing with confidence and know what they need to do to win matches.”

Ottawa plays Friday and Saturday at regionals in Chanute. The top six finishers qualify for state.

Kuczmarski takes a 17-8 record into regionals. Sylvester/Reed has a mark of 14-9.
