KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Ottawa High School softball team played at the top of its game for two of the three games in the Turner Invitational.

The Cyclones defeated Bonner Springs, 6-1, Friday behind Shea Mesik’s pitching gem. On Saturday, Ottawa gave undefeated St. Thomas Aquinas all it could handle in a 1-0 loss. Aquinas scored a late run on an error.

The roof caved in for the Cyclones in a 10-9 loss to St. James.

Mesik finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts against Bonner Springs. She gave up five hits.

Ottawa played one of its better games of the season against St. Thomas Aquinas.

Kendall Blanco went the distance and had four strikeouts.

“Great senior pitching performance by Kendall,” Ottawa coach Joe Serna said. “Couldn’t have asked her to do anything more against a team like that. We had a costly error at third on a bunt situation that allowed Aquinas to score the only run of the game. Felt bad for her, but was proud of the effort and the overall way our players played, especially against a powerhouse like that.”

Senior Hannah Hedges had Ottawa’s lone hit.

Ottawa could not carry over that level of play to the third-place game.

“We couldn’t carry over the momentum of playing a tough game and come out hungry against an opponent like we should’ve against St. James,” Serna said. “This is one we wish we could play over without delays because I’m confident our girls would have pulled it off if our focus wouldn’t have been interrupted because of the weather. But you still have to play the game, no matter what the circumstances and we let another game that we should have won easily slip away. It is very frustrating.”

Monday’s doubleheader at Eudora was postponed because of wet grounds.

Ottawa (7-9) plays today at state-ranked Paola.
