CHANUTE — Ottawa High School senior Jonathan Kuczmarski played with a chip on his shoulder in the Chanute tennis regional this weekend.

Kuczmarski felt slighted with the No. 7 seed in singles. He finished 11th at last year’s state tournament.

He mowed through the competition to finish second in the 4A regional and qualify for his second state appearance.

His only loss came in the finals against the top seed from Independence.

Alex Reed and Vince Sylvester will join Kuczmarski at state. The pair finished fifth in the doubles. The pair had just one loss in the regional.

The pair defeated Ottawa’s other doubles team of Kley Bolivar and Keaton Baker to qualify for state. This is Sylvester’s second trip to state.

Ottawa coach Eric Sparks said it is pretty exciting for those Cyclones to qualify for state.

“Jonathan wants to improve his placement from last year,” Sparks said. “He played good tennis.

“It was a pretty good tournament for [Vince and Alex]. This is Alex’s first trip to state.”
