Ottawa's Kuczmarski finishes 11th in state tourney

WICHITA — Ottawa High School junior Jon Kuczmarski finished 11th Saturday in the 4A State Tennis Tournament in Wichita.

The Cyclone rebounded from a first-round loss in singles to win three of the next four matches to win a medal. It is the first state tennis medal in several years for a Cyclone tenns player.

The Cyclone rebounded from a first-round loss in singles to win three of the next four matches to win a medal. It is the first state tennis medal in several years for a Cyclone tenns player.

Junior Vince Sylvester (15-14) lost both of his singles matches. The doubles team of seniors Cale Paquette and Clint Lyman (9-13) also lost both of their state matches.

All of the Cyclone players were making their first state appearance.

Kuczmarski (15-14) had one tough match in his 9-8 victory over De Soto’s Luke Zoller. He won the tiebreaker 7-3. In the 11th place match, he defeated Independence’s Josh Hilger, 9-5.

Jon Kuczmarski (3-2, 11th): lost to  J. Hilger, Independence, 6-3, 6-3; def. C. Spainhower, Columbus, 9-3; def. L. Zoller, De Soto, 9-8 (7-3); lost to P. Hays, Parsons, 9-0; def. J. Hilger, Independence, 9-5.

Vince Sylvester (0-2): lost to C. Spainhower, Columbus, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6; lost to J. Hilger, Independence, 9-0.

Doubles

Cale Paquette/Clint Lyman (0-2): lost to A. Goodrich/P. Hardy, Independence, 6-2, 6-3; lot to K. Debald/T. Beardmore, Parsons, 9-4.
