WINFIELD — It was not the ending the Ottawa High School tennis players envisioned Friday and Saturday at the 4A State Tournament in Winfield.

Alex Reed and Vince Sylvester made the cut to the top-12 in doubles, but lost their final three matches to place 12th.

Jonathan Kuczmarski went 1-2 in singles after taking 11th last year at state. He lost to De Soto in his first match after receiving a first-round bye.

Kuczmarski had beaten the De Soto player two out of three times prior to state. The OHS senior nipped Miege and fell to McPherson in a close match.

“He did not have his best day,” Ottawa coach Eric Sparks said. “It happened at the wrong time. All throughout the season he improved. He had a great season.”

Reed/Sylvester defeated Trinity and Wellington in back-to-back matches to ensure a top-12 finish.

“After that, they struggled the rest of the way,” Sparks said. “It was an up-and-down tournament for them. The first three or four matches, they played some of their best tennis. They were not tight at all.”

The pair finished 2-4 at state and took home a medal.

Sparks said it was nice for the three seniors to end their careers at the state tournament.

“It is a big accomplishment,” he said. “They had fun playing. It was a real good finish for them.”
