Area prep track athletes qualify for state meet

Area schools are gearing up for the two-day state track meet this weekend in Wichita after qualifying athletes in Friday’s regionals.

The Wellsville, Central Heights and Marais des Cygnes Valley girls squads qualified for state in six events.

The Wellsville, Central Heights and Marais des Cygnes Valley girls squads qualified for state in six events.

The MdCV boys also qualified in six events. The Wellsville boys have five state entrants.

The top four in each event qualified for state.

Central Heights

The Vikings’ 400-meter relay team won the Wellsville regional, 52.04 seconds.

The other five qualifiers finished fourth. They were Ariel Lambert, 100 hurdles (17.20), Amanda Stevenson, 100 (13.56) and long jump (14-11.5), Bianna Erhart, 300 hurdles (52.28) and Regan Markley, javelin (100-3).

The Central Heights boys qualified two in the shot put. Tanner Erhart won the regional at 50-10.75. Tyler Hendron was third at 44-0.75.

Wellsville

Erica Sweeney won the regional girls pole vault (9-6). Emily Newhouse qualified in two individual events: third in the 1,600 (5:47) and second in 3,200 (12:24).

Wellsville’s 3,200 (fourth, 10:55), 400 (third, 52.76) and 1,600 (fourth, 4:30) relays qualified.

Hunter Thuro qualified in two events for the boys. He won the 300 hurdles (40.67) and was second in the 110 hurdles (15.81). Kenneth Hopkins was fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.34).

Landyn Holtwick was fourth in the 100 (11.58). Wellsville’s 400 relay was regional champ (44.61) and the 1,600 relay was third (3:34).

West Franklin

Josh Napper qualified in three events. The junior won the long jump with a school-record leap of 21-10. He was the 200 champ (22.98) and took third in the 100 (11.37).

Anderson County

The Bulldogs will compete in six events (three girls and three boys) at state.

The boys won the 1,600 relay (3:30) in Iola. Tanner Wilson was third in the 800 (2:00.54) and Cale Hedges, fourth (2:00.73).

Stephen Kaufman was fourth in pole vault (12-6).

Alexandra Garbarino will be busy in her three events.

She was second in the 200 (26.71) and 300 hurdles (46.85). She also was a member of the fourth-place 400 relay team (51.25).

MdCV

The girls 3,200 relay team (10:41) was regional champ in Yates Center. Andi Bush was third in the 400 (1:04).

Fourth-place finishers were Alice Freeman (800, 2:38), Camille Massey (3,200, 12:43), Zarin Goodrich (javelin, 85-7) and 1,600 relay (4:29).

Matt Jones, Kal Hamm and Brett Schimmel qualified in two events each. Jones was second in the javelin (145-9) and discus (138-1).

Schimmel was second in the high jump (6-0) and 300 hurdles (43.51).

Hamm was second in the 110 hurdles (15.89) and third in high jump (5-10). The 3,200 relay was fourth (9:03).
