Wellsville track rolls in regional

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville High School track teams had a successful regional Friday in Wellsville.

The boys were regional champs and qualified for state in 11 events. The Eagles won seven regional events.

The boys were regional champs and qualified for state in 11 events. The Eagles won seven regional events.

The girls were regional runner-up and qualified for state in seven events. The Wellsville girls won three events.

The Central Heights girls are sending six events to state, which runs Friday and Saturday at Wichita State University.

The West Franklin girls have four events qualified for the state meet.

Wellsville’s Hunter Thuro will compete in four events at state. He was the regional champion in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

Chase Bouse, Nick Thomasson and Zach Strawn qualified in three events.

Wellsville boys won the 100 (Trevor Heckman), 200 (Strawn), 3,200 (Bouse) and 400 and 1,600 relays.

The Wellsville girls won the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Sade LaMay, Emily Newhouse and Grace Graniewski qualified in three events.

The Central Heights girls were paced by Brianna Erhart, who qualified in both hurdles races and the high jump.

Viking junior Gavin Holler won the boys pole vault.

West Franklin senior Alexis Yelland is headed to Wichita in three events (1,600, 3,200 and 3,200 relay). Megan Ecord qualified in two events (800, 3,200 relay).

The girls and the boys 3,200 relay broke school records.

“Our distance girls had a great meet,” West Franklin coach Susan Zentz said. “This will be the first state meet appearance for all of these girls. Their hard work with distance coach Kyle Conley has really paid off this season.”
