EMPORIA — The opponent got its revenge in Sunday’s afternoon game against Ottawa Legion AA. Emporia beat out the top seed after three games 8-4, and won the Sam Ellis Classic championship later that evening.

Ottawa went into Sunday’s game with a 3-0 record after beating Lawrence Cactus Friday and the Wichita Aces and Emporia Post 5 Saturday.

“We didn’t hit real great in both of our Saturday games,” Shawn Herrmann, Ottawa Legion AA head coach, said. “We did have two really great games from both our pitchers.”

Sam Carver, junior pitcher, came in the first inning of Ottawa’s game against Wichita and pitched the rest of the game. Ottawa won 5-4 thanks to a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh with two outs delivered by Dayne Yung, junior utility.

“(Yung) hit the ball pretty hard every time he was at bat that game,” Herrmann said. “We had runners on second and third and both runs scored off his hit.”

Connor Stepp, junior pitcher, pitched the entirety of Ottawa’s second game that afternoon against Emporia. Stepp pitched a shutout, and Ottawa won 2-0.

After the Sam Ellis Classic, Ottawa Legion AA’s record stands at 6-2. The team is set to play Iola, the defending AA state champions, at 6 p.m. today at Allen County Community College.

“They beat us 9-1 last weekend, so we are looking for a little revenge,” Herrmann said.
