Ottawa tops Paola, qualifies for state tourney

POMONA — Nathan Roth tossed a complete game Saturday in the American Legion Zone 6 championship game against Paola in Pomona.

Ottawa defeated Paola, 7-4, to win the title and advance to the state tournament in Wathena. Ottawa plays the Zone 1 winner 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. It was the first Zone championship since 2010 for Ottawa.

Ottawa snapped a pitcher's duel by scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning for forge a 7-1 lead. Paola came back with three in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to three.

Nathan, who was the tournament MVP, closed it out in the seventh.
