Last year, Marcum was thrown into a situation where she had to learn the players quickly as a new coach.

It took nearly the whole season for the players to mesh together in her system.

Now, the players understand her and she knows their strengths and weaknesses.

“I am a lot more comfortable,” Marcum said as she enters her second season. “I know the kids. I know their abilities.

“I will have some adjustments to make. We have some girls that are better than they were last year. They surprised me. They have to trust me. We have that established.

“We started out really rough, but came out with a winning record. As long as we are playing to the best of our ability and giving it everything we have, I can’t ask for more than that. Hopefully that translates into wins. The goal is to improve every day.”

Another big facet is experience. Central Heights has it with five returning starters.

“They are strong players,” she said. “We will have a couple of years to work together. Hopefully we have that confidence in each other so we can move forward a lot faster.”

The returning starters are Regan Markley, Sydney Meyer, Emily Miller, Finnian Cody and Lexi Griffin.

The only new spot is at setter.

“That will be an adjustment,” Marcum said. “We will have to get that trust in a new setter.”

The leading candidate for the starting position is sophomore Sarah Bell.

Marcum said the first year was all about adjusting to each other.

“I had to prove myself to them,” she said. “I am a teaching coach. They know my expectations. If you work hard, you will see a pay off.

“We have good attitudes.”

A big part of her philosophy is the players having accountability and responsibility. Two characteristics that will follow them throughout life.

The Vikings open the season Sept. 2 at Lebo.
