The Vikings bring back two seniors in Cole Sheldon and Shelby Cardell, who will be key to the team’s success.

“If nothing else, we will have good leadership from the seniors,” second year coach Phillip Pearson said. “Cole really came on strong for us last season. I think he had a pretty good chance to qualify for state, but he didn’t quite have the regional race he wanted.”

Despite no state qualifications last season, Pearson, said there is a big upside to having the entire team back.

“One, they know what to expect,” Pearson said. “Two, they will all be better runners. I’d like to think if we all run well together, we have a chance to qualify (for state) as a team.”

The Pioneer League has been tough the past few years with the likes of Wellsville and Anderson County and the addition of Iola last year.

A total of nine runners make up the boys side, while the girls have significantly less participants this year.

Pearson said the only girl runner this year is senior Kirby Laird.

“It is the first time she’s run cross country,” Pearson said. “She is a good runner. We graduated a senior last year in Natasha Carlson. She was real steady and ran her best time last year in her last meet.”

The Central Heights cross country team’s first meet is at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Burlington.
