A massive freshman class and senior leadership has first year Central Heights volleyball coach Cadi Marcum optimistic for the upcoming season.

“My expectations are high,” Marcum said. “I want (the players) to succeed and I want them to have goals.”

Marcum, who previously coached the Blue Valley Southwest High School freshman team for two years, is a teaching coach and will focus heavily on the fundamentals this year, she said.

“I think we are going to start with that,” Marcum said. “Success isn’t just measured by what is on a scoreboard. Success for the girls will be measured by if they learn and get better each day.”

The team gears up after an up and down 2012 campaign. The Lady Vikings had a stunning upset victory in the first round of sub-state last season over Jayhawk-Linn, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23. Central Heights came into the match as a No. 7 seed playing the No. 2 seeded Jayhawks. The victory was short-lived thanks to a 25-15, 25-18 loss to rival Wellsville in the semifinals.

Forty-three total players make up this year’s roster, including close to 20 freshmen players. The Vikings also return three seniors, two of which have varsity experience.

Kenzie Hayward, senior middle, is a four year varsity letter player and Whitney Kraus, senior outside hitter, returns to lead the Vikings. Hayward is an all-area and all-league selection.

“Whitney is quiet, but her hustle is tremendous and all the girls look up to that,” Marcum said.

The team also returns Madison Blevins, senior middle. who played junior varsity last season.

“She makes the team feel like a family,” Marcum said. “Her attitude and work ethic is immeasurable. She is a great kid.”

The Vikings open the season Tuesday in a triangular at Lebo High School against Lebo and Marias des Cygnes Valley.
