Eagle spikers take second in tourney

The Wellsville High School volleyball team finished second Saturday in the Central Heights Tournament.

The Eagles went 4-1 in the tournament.

Wellsville fell to Burlington, 25-19, 25-17, in the championship match.

“The girls played hard all day long and are doing a lot of good things to make the team better,” Wellsville coach Eric Evans said.

“We still have quite a bit of room for improvement, but I can’t wait to see how this team develops throughout the rest of the season.”

In pool play, Wellsville defeated Humboldt (25-4, 25-23), Prairie View (25-17, 25-11) and Rossville (25-6, 25-7).

Wellsville took out Waverly (25-19, 25-17) in the semifinals.

Ashley Sparks led the Eagles with 35 kills and 16 digs. Emily Newhouse had 78 assists.

Wellsville (5-2) plays 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Fort Scott and Paola.

Ashley Sparks: 35 kills, 5 stuff blocks, 16 digs, 2.4 serve-receive.

Karly Patton: 27 kills, 5 aces.

Emily Newhouse: 78 assists, 6 aces.

Grace Graniewski: 19 kills, 4 stuff blocks.

Ashley Ebeck: 19 digs, 5 aces.
