Wellsville splits matches in tourney

BALDWIN CITY — The Wellsville High School volleyball team went 3-3 Saturday in the Baldwin Invitational.

“We played at an above-average level the whole day,” Wellsville coach Eric Evans said.

“Competing against larger schools (4A-6A) and handling ourselves the way we did Saturday is going to provide the confidence we need to gain momentum for this season. I’m proud of the effort we sustained throughout the day,”

Wellsville defeated Osawatomie (25-16, 25-20), Andale (16-25, 25-23, 25-18) and Bonner Springs (25-13, 25-22).

Wellsville lost to Baldwin (25-15, 25-12), Gardner (26-24, 23-25, 26-24) and Paola (25-22, 25-22).

Emily Newhouse: 100 assists, 5 aces

Ashley Sparks: 44 kills, 26 digs

Karly Patton: 18 kills, 9 stuff blocks

Ottawa JV

TOPEKA — The Ottawa High School junior varsity volleyball team finished third Saturday in the Highland Park Invitational.

The squad defeated Tonganoxie (25-20, 13-25, 15-7) in the third-place match. Ottawa fell to Tonganoxie in pool play, 25-11, 25-6).

“I was glad we had another chance to play Tonganoxie,” Ottawa coach Renee Crenshaw said. “We did not compete with them in pool play, but stepped up to win. Really proud of how the girls worked together and played hard.

“One of the goals our team has is to not miss serves. We served 91 percent for the tournament. Our setters worked hard all day to get the ball to their hitters.”

Ottawa lost to Silver Lake in the semifinals, 25-14, 25-22. In pool play, Ottawa defeated Topeka West (25-11, 25-12) and Jeff West (25-18, 25-15).

Ottawa (7-8) plays today at home against De Soto.

Hannah Maxwell: 20 kills.

Brynn Ferguson: 10 kills, 10 blocks.

Chloe Brown: 20 set assists.

    Brittany Pfizenmaier: 15 assists.

    Lacey Waterman: 18 digs.
