WAMEGO — The West Franklin High School cross-country teams ran in a state atmosphere meet Saturday in Wamego, the site of the state meet for 1A, 2A and 4A.

“We didn’t have our full team at the meet, but this was the first time any of the runners that I took had competed at a race of this size,” West Franklin coach Tara Huggard said. “I believe it was a great experience for them and it allowed them to get a feeling of what they will see later in the season at the regional meet.”

Alexis Yelland led the Falcon girls in 35th place and earned a medal.

“I was extremely impressed with Alexis’ race and very proud of her for medaling at such a large race,” Huggard said. She has definitely impressed me this year with her ability to step up and be a leader not only at practice but also by giving it her all at the meets. I have never seen someone work so hard and have such a positive attitude.

“I was also proud of the rest of the team.  Nobody let the size of the meet intimidate them, instead they all went out there and gave it their all.”
