Confidence and the right body language. That is what Ottawa High School volleyball coach Laura Jeannin is trying to find.

The Cyclone players did not play with confidence and pretty much was beaten from the start Tuesday against De Soto. Ottawa fell in three games, 25-16, 25-8, 25-12.

“We have experienced this against Eudora,” Jeannin said. “We have had lots of talks with the team to try to find what gets us going. What pushes us through moments that are tough. We are still working on it.”

De Soto manhandled Ottawa in all three sets. The Wildcats jumped to a 10-1 lead in the opening set. De Soto led 10-2 in the second set. Ottawa played a little bit with the Wildcats in the third set.

The score was tied at 4-4 when the Wildcats scored 10 straight points.

“We did not compete,” Jeannin said. “They ran their offense against us and we did not step up. We did not show who we were as a team and compete. That is so disappointing.

“They are really trying. We have to find what it takes to beat teams. Every team we are playing is a good team.

“We have to play our best to compete against these teams. We did not fight at any point.”

The only time Ottawa strung together any points was at the end of the first set. Ottawa rallied from a 22-8 deficit to 24-16.

“It is hard to pinpoint what it is,” Jeannin said. “We played with no confidence. We have to find that intensity we play with and bring it every time we play. That is a big struggle.

“We have to work on pressure situations.”

Ottawa junior varsity lost 25-14, 25-10. The freshmen squad fell 25-20, 19-25, 15-13.

Ottawa (7-5) plays Saturday in the Rossville Invitational.
