COUNCIL GROVE — The West Franklin High School volleyball team had a roller-coaster night Tuesday with Council Grove in Council Grove.

The Falcons ended up with the sweep.

“It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win,” West Franklin coach Angie Corwine said.

West Franklin won 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13, 16-25, 25-21.

“We came out flat the first match, but still played well enough to win comfortably,” Corwine said. “The second match we came out on fire in the first set with a 25-13 win, then Council Grove turned up the serving and defensive pressure. Our serve-receive was rough and our hitters made several mistakes during key times.

“Bailey Whittington got us out of the hole in the third set with her serving. During that run she had three aces and had several tough serves that Council Grove overpassed and our hitters put those down for kills. We were definitely pushed and it was good to see that we didn’t fall apart, we just pushed back.  Bailey had one of her better nights offensively.”

Whittington had six aces and 11 kills.

West Franklin (6-0) plays Thursday in Eudora.

Bailey Whittington: 11 kills 11, 6 aces 6, 4 digs 4.

McKenzie Steele: 10 kills, 9 digs.
