OU pair earn academic honors

Two Ottawa University women’s soccer players have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Annie Kessler and Autumn Surage have been selected to the District 3 team.

Two Ottawa University women’s soccer players have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Annie Kessler and Autumn Surage have been selected to the District 3 team.

Kessler, a sophomore defender from Paola, has started all 16 games this season. She has scored four goals, tallied one assist, has 35 shots with 16 of them on goal, and has one game-winning goal.

Kessler earned Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of the week honors this season. She was an honorable mention All-KCAC selection last year at midfield.

Kessler also is a member of the track team, earning All-KCAC honors in the 400-meters in the spring. She excels off the field of play as well, earning  a Medal of Excellence in the classroom, the CRC Press Chemistry Achievement Award and was named to the KCAC All-Academic team.      

Because of her work off of the field, Kessler received the Dudley Geise Champions of Character Scholarship from the Braves Athletic Hall of Fame this past fall. Kessler is a biology major.

Surage, a junior forward from Colorado Springs, Colo., is on the All-District team for the second straight season.  

She is a two-time second team All-KCAC selection and has appeared and started in all 16 games.

Surage had scored a total of 14 points this season with five goals and four assists.

She had 35 shots with 21 of them being on goal and one game-winning goal. Surage earned a Medal of Excellence in 2011 and 2012. She was the 2012 Dudley Geise NAIA Champions of Character recipient and was named team captain for the 2013 season. Surage is a human services major.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in November.
