WELLSVILLE — Brad Burkdoll came to Wellsville with the idea of not messing up a good thing.

So far, he succeeded. The first-year Wellsville football coach guided the Eagles to a 7-2 mark and a district title.

Wellsville is making its fourth straight playoff appearance.

The Eagles play 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Eureka, which is making its first state playoffs since 2010.

“I like the way we are playing,” Burkdoll said following Thursday’s 24-0 district-title clinching victory over West Franklin in Wellsville. “It was physical. They were ready.”

Burkdoll said the seniors, who have been in the playoffs their whole careers, understood how to go about their business.

“They are used to it,” he said.

Wellsville’s offense is starting to hit on all cylinders.

The catalyst has been senior quarterback Shamus Kearney.

His move full-time to starting quarterback allowed Luke Meyer to move to halfback to team with Landon Holtwick and Brett Osbern.

“It gives us a pretty good punch,” Burkdoll said.

Wellsville displayed it against West Franklin. Meyer paced the ground attack with 59 yards on 19 carriers and scored a touchdown and two-point conversion.

Kearney hooked up with Carter Mann on a touchdown pass. Kearney scored the conversion.

The final score was an 7-yard run touchdown run by Holtwick. Kearney passed to Cole Silsby for the conversion.

Burkdoll said the Eagles do a good job of keeping the defense off balance with their attack.

Central Heights

OSAGE CITY — Despite the 24-22 setback Thursday to Osage City, the Vikings qualified for the playoffs.

Central Heights (5-4) plays 7 p.m. Tuesday at Humboldt (7-2), which was the district 6 champion.

The Vikings lost 48-6 to Humboldt in last year’s bi-district playoff game.
