Not many times does two teams meet this early in the playoffs with this kind of pedigree.

Wellsville and Colgan are used to being the playoffs and playing deep in the playoffs. Only one will advance from today’s 2 p.m. game in Pittsburg.

“We are excited,” Wellsville coach Brad Burkdoll said. “Colgan has an excellent team. They have a real good tailback. You have to earn it at this point in the season.”

Both teams are 8-2 and understand how to prepare for the third game in 11 days. Wellsville is in the regional round for the fourth straight season.

“We have a lot of upperclasmen,” Burkdoll said. “They have experience in the playoffs. Every year is different. We have an excellent senior class.

“You have to have more focus at this time of year. Practices are a little shorter. It is another step. It will be a challenge.”

One good thing the weather will be a lot nicer than in past few games and will play on a turf surface.

Burkdoll said that should make it better for both teams.

The coach expects a defensive battle.

“Our defense is playing well right now,” Burkdoll said. “The first one to score 24 or 28 might win this week. I would not expect a shootout. It will be an even matchup.”

Wellsville’s offense is hitting on all cylinders as it enters the game. Wellsville’s ground attack is chewing up yards and making big plays. Wellsville has four capable runners in the backfield.

The Eagles can open it up behind quarterback Shamus Carter and receiver Carter Mann.

“We have gotten better at it every week,” Burkdoll said of the passing game.

Both teams do an excellent job in the turnover-ratio. Colgan came up with four turnovers against Caney.

Special teams could be another area that could decide the game.

“We need to make plays on special teams,” Burkdoll said.

He said the field position game will be big.

“We will be ready to go,” Burkdoll said.
